Spoonhunt: Discover & Explore Food Around You with English Menu
Finding restaurants and understanding the menu in China are big challenges for those not familiar with Chinese.Today, Ringy will show you how to solve this problem with WeChat.
We'll be using a free WeChat that provides English language restaurant search and menu translation service called: Spoonhunt. With Spoonhunt, you will be able to have an overall understanding of the restaurant before you go there and at the same time select the food you like ahead of time so you could tell them to the restaurant once you arrive.
‘Near Me’:
Select 'Near Me' from the menu buttons at the bottom. (allow the account to access your location information). Straight away you can now see a selection of restaurants nearby.
From the top right corner you can select your familiar currency and curently based city. Major cities in China are quickly available. Selecting 'more' at the bottom will bring up a long list of cities across China and the globe.
After choosing your city and district you may wish to narrow your search down by cuisine. Play around with it till you find a restaurant you want and select from the list. The restaurant page will come up.
Within the restaurant page:
1) Select 'menu'. You will now be able to see the individual items listed on their menu with prices and pictures.
Select the food items you want and when you're done, press 'order' and it will create a bi-lingual list for you and at the bottom is a space for you to type in any special requests.
You could click the 'Translate' button to have the machine to translate it, or send Ringy a WheChat message to ask for gauranteed interpretation by real person.
Once you have all the information there, you could take a screenshot and show it to the waiter/waitress once you are at the restaurant.
This is quite awesome for people like me who always have the difficulty with making decision. I could now look at the menu and make the decision on my way without keeping the waitress waiting for me.
2) Going back to the restaurant page. There is an option to 'Click for Chinese Address' which brings up a bi-lingual taxi card. It also has access to English language maps.
3) Through selecting 'Invite' in the lower left corner you can send an invitation to the restaurant to our friends on WeChat. You need to fill out a title, a time and add a brief description. Once saved, this appointment can now be forwarded to your friends easily either directly in a group/individual chat thread or even through your moments for them to RSVP.
Other features also exist such as favoriting restaurants or adding reviews.
